Wulfstan the Hawkesbury Hare Unveiling Jan 19th 2017

St Wulfstan’s Day this year saw a very special event at Hawkesbury Primary School, the unveiling of ‘Wulfstan the Hawkesbury Hare’ – a 5’ tall fibreglass hare that is taking part in the forthcoming ‘Cotswold Hare Trail 2017’.

Sponsored by the Beaufort Arms @ Hawkesbury Upton, our Hare will be one of 80 spread throughout the Cotswolds from March to September.

The theme for the Beaufort’s Hare is the life of Wulfstan, Hawkesbury’s very own Patron Saint – of Vegetarians and Peasants. Jan 19th is his saints day.

Artist Linda Jane Smith has done a fantastic job bringing the hare to life; On his cloak, between his ears, Wulfstan’s mitre is resplendent, illustrating the fact that he was the last ever Anglo Saxon Bishop …

On one side of his foreleg is his Bishops crozier and on the other is the Domesday Book – he was responsible for the compilation of this in our area …

Around the hem of the cloak is a Bayeux type tapestry with episodes from his career – priest at Hawkesbury in the 1030’s (legend of the goose), with Edward the Confessor who appointed him Bishop of Worcester (legend of the crozier), a Bristol ship in trouble (miracle on the Irish Sea), banning the slave trade in Bristol in 1090, and finally church builder at Worcester and Westbury.

Tremendous work.

Huge thank to Hawkesbury Headmaster Ed and his staff at the school, Festival Director Florence, artist Linda, helper Leon and most of all, the pupils of Hawkesbury Primary who were brilliant.

Look out for the hare this summer …
